Scientists have found a way to turn female mice into lesbians. And it’s not by sending them on a date with me.
Deleting the, ahem, FucM gene, which limits the brain’s production of estrogen, caused these mice “ to reject the advances of their male counterparts and attempt to mate with fellow females.” In mice, estrogen masculinizes the brain and having a lot of it causes the females to act like males. It does not have the same effect in humans. Researchers say that it’s impossible to draw conclusions about human sexuality from this study. Apparently, they were just deeply interested in the genetic causes of rodent homosexuality.
As for me, I don’t care if homosexuality is a choice, lifestyle or just the way a person is born. It being one way or the other doesn’t make it right or wrong. Sadly, a lot of people who are into these studies are looking for either: “I had no choice so you can’t hate me!” or “You have a choice so you can’t be that way!” But that’s the wrong debate. Choices should be as valued as medical conditions.
At the end of the day, homosexuality is harmless and seems to cheer quite a few people up. Two people choosing to fuck each other is no less valid than two people being driven by genetics. Either way, it’s none of your business.
