Brain of Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Victims of Body Dysmorphic Disorder look in the mirror and see a monster looking back at them.  And, when some women hear about BDD, they figure they have it.  Why wouldn’t they?  After all, they don’t look like the people they spend the most time with.  That is, the people on television.  Thinking you have BDD should probably be its own special disorder. We could call it “culture.”

Now researchers at UCLA have determined that the brains of people with BDD have abnormalities in processing visual input, particularly when examining their own face. Further, they found that the same systems of the brain are overactive in both BDD and obsessive-compulsive disorder, suggesting a link between the two. The research appears in the February issue of the journal Archives of General Psychiatry.

Although part of me wants to file this disease into the “get over it” part of my brain, BDD must be a horrible thing to suffer from.  These people can never really see themselves and quite a few of them commit suicide.  I can’t blame them.  I’d commit suicide too if I couldn’t see myself.
