Fishing With John

I assume that everyone has already seen Fishing With John but then I remember that some people haven’t really seen anything. Some people don’t live in urban environments.  They live surrounded by boxstores and get their culture recommendations, not from stoned crazy people, but from television.  These poor bastards might never even have heard of Fishing With John.

Fishing With John was a 1992 fishing show. Actor, musician and artist John Lurie would take various celebrities fishing.  Here’s the synop:

John Lurie knows absolutely nothing about fishing, but that doesn’t stop him from undertaking the adventure of a lifetime in Fishing with John. Traveling with his special guests to the most exotic and dangerous places on earth, John Lurie battles sharks with Jim Jarmusch off the tip of Long Island, goes ice fishing with Willem Dafoe at Maine’s northernmost point, braves the Costa Rican jungle with Matt Dillon, takes Tom Waits to Jamaica, and searches for the elusive giant squid with Dennis Hopper in Thailand.

It sounds stupid and it is.  But it’s also great.  Fishing With John is not only the best fishing show ever made but also the best celebrity show. You don’t even need to believe me.  After the jump, you can watch episode 2 – featuring the grouchy and  whining Tom Waits.

    You’re welcome.

The fort was in its last days and coming down when I moved to Toronto. I lived in the College Hostel for three years until the landlord changed and the new one paid me leave after an unsuccessful attempt at eviction. And I semi-knew some of the BFGs in the way that everyone in the market semi-knew everyone else in the market. Doubt any of them would remember me now.
