The “developing world” saying seems to me more like a measure of similarity than one of development. The more like us they are, the more “developed” they are. I don’t think we’re all that developed.
Don’t really think anyone is.

I have been there. Not all of it, of course. But enough.
I came up with a rule after my time in the service: if a place has a taboo against touching with the left hand, it’s a place to avoid. Because, you know, the left hand is to wipe with. Yuck.
Give me specialized paper to wipe my bum, soap, power tools, fresh food and air conditioning anyday.
