I was quite excited when Pleo the robot dinosaur was in the works. I planned to buy one, joined the mailing list and even filled out surveys. But then the company that produced them made a strange decision. They jumped up the price.
Pleo was hyped as the first affordable, high-quality robotic pet. He was supposed to cost two hundred dollars. I forget what the price was finally increased to but it was a substantial change. I remember thinking — well, that’s it for me and Pleo.
You see, two hundred dollars is whim money for me. But once you get above that, I can start thinking of better things to buy than a robot dinosaur.
Apparently, so can everyone else.
