I awoke at ten today. Typically, this would be very early. Today it was very late.
Shalome had a plane to catch and I had a wedding to attend. The good news is that awaking two hours late made any sort of sentimental goodbye impossible. We just ran about the house swearing and grabbing things until we ran out the door. I recommend this to anyone.
And then she was gone and I was on the GO TRAIN.
Before I knew it, I had arrived at my Nan’s house to meet the small portion of my family that I actually know and occasionally speak to. I’ve never been very good with the whole family thing. I don’t know why.

I can’t be the only person who has such difficulty keeping active relationships with their blood — though my sister, who I haven’t seen for two years, certainly makes it seem that way — and I have the same difficulty with friends. Co-workers aside, I only see the people I like every two months or so.
This is something I often resolve to change but never quite get around to. And you know what? One day I’ll wake up and all these people will be dead. Then what? I suppose I’ll resolve to visit their graves.
But today wasn’t a day to think about my family dying. (Tuesday is the day for that.) Today was a day to celebrate one of them, who I haven’t seen in years, marrying a fellow I once met. It was a happy day.
Or so I’m told.
The cats at my Nan’s place certainly seemed to having a good time.

And before we knew it, there were even more cats at my Nan’s place.

All of this just goes to show that, no matter how nice your suit may be, a kitten is still cuter than you. And so is my Nan. I may look like the bad guy in this photo but she –against my better judgment– put me up to it. Give the camera the finger, she said. It’ll be funny.

And I’m pretty damn sure that she’s to blame for whatever those cats were doing too. She harvests their kittens for nefarious purposes only known to her and whatever dark gods she’s following this week.
But anyway . . .
We arrived at the hockey arena in time to see the wedding. It seemed quite good. People exchanged their vows and whatnot. I sat in the second row. The priest kept winking at me. And the ceremony was sensibly short and to the point. They got married. It was nice. If you’re into that sort of thing.
In spite of the amorous priest, I felt as if I’d had a cold shower. If I had any romantic and melancholy notions about Shalome’s departure, the wedding certainly put a damper on them. Nothing makes me feel less romantic than a wedding. The ceremony makes it clear that pre-marital sex carries great risks. It can, for example, lead to marriage. And I’m old fashioned. I don’t believe in post-marital sex.
Be that as it may — it would be a bit indecent to talk about the wedding any further except to say that I hope Ashley and Jamie are happy together, wish them them the best and give me more of whatever it’s called when your cousin has a kid. Am I an uncle or do I just have more cousins now? I have no idea.

Post-marital sex is on the endangered species list, endanged practice list rather. Warning: marriage can lead to alienation and boredom.
You are certainly not bourgeois enough for marriage.
The “whole family thing” is hard to take when you are into sincere feelings, if you know what I mean.

Big Brother, It was great seeing you @ the wedding. I loved the blog. Great picture of you and Uncle Bri. I meant to say that I really liked your suit. It fits so well.
Love you and look forward to seeing you again soon! Two years was way too long.
