“The farewell between Hitler and Mussolini at the station was very affectionate. Both men were moved.”
Like a note played in a different octave, two words can have the same meaning but a different pitch. There is a difference between goodbye and farewell. This is a farewell.
A filthy angel dropped into my life for the past two weeks. Now she’s returning to the smutty heaven that spat her at me. She has done her job well; looking as pretty as a peach while cheerfully affirming my belief that the world is fundamentally cruel and irrational; that feelings only exist to hurt me and that we only have, at best, a little bit of happiness here. Best to grab it while you can. Sooner or later it goes home.
Flaps its dirty wings and flies away. Leaving nothing but a stain.
And maybe it comes back. Maybe it doesn’t. Or maybe it does and everything is different. It doesn’t matter. One should always expect defeat and then decide what to do. By that rubric, even if I never see her again, it was still worth it. There were no losers here. And some things don’t belong in a cage.
I wish her well. And I’ll miss her.

People keep asking me how I’m doing. The answer is fine. But it occurs to me that the song may give some the wrong idea. It’s an inside joke. No one should worry about it.
