Something that I wrote a couple of years ago has paid off.
“Jack Jaw and the Arab’s Ape” was my first and, so far, only noir story. It was a mercenary tale. I only wrote it because I found the Thug Lit site and I liked the T-Shirts that they paid people in. Having no idea what noir actually is but knowing they liked violent monkeys, I spent part of the afternoon writing a story about a violent ape. It was hot and I was hungover. Too much coke and gin the night before.
I sent the story off. Expected a rejection but got a t-shirt. It was even clean.
But that’s not the end of it. They’re putting out a print anthology of the year’s best from their site. I’m in it. And they paid me another $75, which I spent on the hydro bill. I always spend any money I make writing on bills. Maybe that’s why I’ve stopped submitting. I should spend the money on cufflinks. That would be an incentive.
Anyway, the book comes out this summer but the first trailer is out now. (When did books get trailers? It’s a good idea. Almost makes reading look fun.) If you watch the trailer carefully, you’ll see my name. I’m “And Others.” I usually am. If I’m lucky.
