The insane might be true. And we’ve hit a reality bump.
Some people at anti-war protests are now claiming that they are being watched by insects. This sounds like a paranoid fantasy. It might not be. In March of 2006 I wrote about DARPA’s interest in manufacturing cyborg insects. It’s now October of 2007. They might have had some success.
We have entered a world where we cannot trust dragonflies. (Pigeons and sharks and rats have always been suspect.) It doesn’t even matter if the allegations are true or if this is some sort of disinformation campaign. The fact is, we don’t know. The insects might be watching us. The birds could be armed. Mother nature might be weaponized against us. We don’t know and no one will tell us.
This fills me with disgust and grief. I don’t know how a person can remain sane when every creature could be the agent of a conscious human enemy. This is the stuff of paranoid fantasy. Making the delusions of insane people real is a definite step towards rendering humanity utterly mad.
We’re already crazy enough. Do we really need to start thinking that even the bugs are working against us? I don’t think so. DARPA does. That’s where we differ.

[...] is this really such a problem? Is being trapped in rubble enough of a threat that the whole animal kingdom should be turned into a government surveillance device? I’m 31 and I don’t think I know anyone who has been trapped in rubble. As I write [...]
