The digital world and the real world are getting mixed up. Gibson and Neal Stephenson saw it coming but we’ve actually reached the point when the metaverse is up and running. And, sadly, it sucks.
I tried Second Life for a couple of hours one night. It was shortly after reading this story about the french fascist party being setting up a headquarters and being attacked. There were exploding pigs and everything. It looked like quite a spectacle and it looked like fun.
But it wasn’t. All I could figure out how to do was wander around and talk to people. I guess you can buy things too but, seriously, do I need a virtual coat? It’s twenty below with the windchill in Toronto. I need a real coat.
