I cannot, for the life of me, understand the American government’s attitude towards science.
Evolution, for example, is not a theory. It is not only a fact but a fact so simple that Richard Dawkins can explain it in under six hundred words. It has been proven and observed time and time again. Usually with fruit flies. While some of its finer points can be debated, there is no question about the existence of evolution. Animal husbandry is based on it and a Central European Monk, Gregor Mendel, published a paper on genetics in 1866. Just imagine how far we’ve come since 1866 and how much more proof there is now.
Global Warming. Once again it is a fact. The human impact is a fact. Like evolution, it is as common-sense as anything is ever going to get. If you don’t believe me, watch this simple demonstration for children. That’s right, even kids can understand it. Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect are that simple.
Global Warming has even affected evolution. The genes of northern fruit flies are starting to look a lot more like the genes of southern fruit flies. But, if you don’t believe in evolution – as if your beliefs matter – I suppose that doesn’t prove anything.
Why is the US Senate releasing a Skeptic’s Guide to Global Warming while a Senator claims that the whole thing is caused by media alarmism? That sort of stupidity is unconscionable. I merely hope that this level of purposeful ignorance is unique to American politicians. (That way, it can be corrected.) Maybe I’m an optimist but I believe that the American public cannot be stupid enough to fall for this. They gave us Rocky Balboa for God’s sake.
