I like finding science stories that explain something I’ve noticed. This one is especially good because it demeans restaurant patrons as well as it explains them.
Fringe-lipped bats exchange culture by making noises. Stupid bats eavesdrop on smarter ones while they eat and then, from the noises they make, decide whether the food is good or bad. So, if you’re a bat and you hear another one saying yum, you start hunting whatever he’s eating.
Restaurant patrons do the same thing. Once someone orders something you can be sure that a bunch of other people will follow suit. I always thought it was a sheep sort of thing. Now I know that it’s a batty one.
Oh yeah – cute bat doll here.
