Hot and Steamy Robots

Although I love the sleek and the hi-tech, I much prefer the boxy and the cranky. One set of chains and wheels has more personality than a thousand microchips. Just add a smokestack and I’m in early industrial heaven. (That’s the place where all of the well behaved chimney sweeps go.)

The good people at Crabfu Steamworks obviously feel the same way. They build steam powered robots. Some of these are originals and others are hacks – like the Armaton, based on Tandy’s toy and remade with tools from Jensen’s Steam Engines.

They also provide some directions on how to create these wonderful beasts. I guess you could say it’s open source steampunk. But if you start saying things like that, don’t be surprised when the word geek and nerd gets thrown around. Still, who cares? You’ll have a fleet of robots who are more than capable of blasting steam into the smug faces of your detractors. It’s not much but it sure beats sobbing in the washroom.
