Thought you needed eyes to see? So did I. Turns out we were both wrong. Bionic eyes aren’t just for Batou anymore. An American woman, who has dubbed herself The Robo-Chick, has had a device implanted that allows her to see even though she lost both her eyes at the tender age of nineteen. The contraption unfortunately doesn’t work if you were born blind.
The device is a bit Rube Goldberg-ish but it works. A camera on her glasses sends signals to a computer on her waist, which is plugged into her brain. This allows her to see flashes of light and outlines of objects. It’s not great but it sure beats seeing nothing. Pretty soon we’ll be wondering why we ever had eyes at all.
