SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) is now looking for light signals from aliens as opposed to their radio broadcasts. Makes sense to me. I’d rather see the lobster people’s Monica Belluci than listen to their Rush Limbaugh.
But this reminded me of the point that French astronomer Luc Arnold made about a year ago. He figured that the best way to look for aliens was not to listen but to look for large artificial structures. Like Larry Niven’s Ringworld or perhaps a giant floating triangle. You know, something that doesn’t just happen in nature. Maybe a giant Triceratops revolving around a distant sun on a magic surfboard.
I always liked that idea. I liked Ringworld too. But the title always makes me think of ringworm.
