You Say Goodbye, I Say Hello

Sony is chopping it’s robot line and hard. First AIBO was put to sleep and now Qrio is gone. Poor sweet Qrio. I guess that whole “Sony doesn’t make useful robots” thing didn’t go over as well as expected. Who would have thought?

But it’s not all dark news on the robot front. The “Humanoid Robotics Project headed by the Manufacturing Science and Technology Center (MSTC), which are sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) through New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)” – whoever the fuck all those people are – is developing a new robot by the name of Promet.

He’s a lot scarier looking than Qrio. But I guess that’s to be expected. After all, his frightening appearance was designed by “Mr. Yutaka Izubuchi, a mechanical animation designer famous for his robots that appear in Japanese anime, including the well-known PATLABOR.”

Lovely. And if Promet breaks down my door in the dead of night, I’m coming for you Yutaka. Don’t think I’m not.
