Now that I have your attention, there is a new Emory study out that says that political partisans don’t let facts interfere with their opinions. We apparently needed a study to tell us this. A few thousand years of human history weren’t quite enough.
“We did not see any increased activation of the parts of the brain normally engaged during reasoning,” said Drew Westen, director of clinical psychology at Emory who led the study. “What we saw instead was a network of emotion circuits lighting up.”
And I’m sure that some emotional circuits lit up when you looked at that swastika. But don’t worry. Now that scientists have the brain scans to prove that political people aren’t reasonable people, I’m sure we’ll all just behave well and think twice before doing something stupid.
