Charlie isn’t the first chimp to start smoking. In Asia, Feili, also took up the habit when her mate, who is twenty eight years older than her, was unable to “meet her sexual demands.”
I feel sorry for these chimps. Not only for Feili, who will ineveitably be forced to quit by people who have caged her and still feel like they have a moral highground, but for her mate, who’s sexual prowess is now being questioned in newspapers all over the world.
We are given very little information about the nature of her sexual demands so I would caution people to not judge her mate too harshly. I know that I would not be very keen on humping a chimp in front of a bunch of gawking tourists.
These chimps are prisoners and I don’t think that we, their jailers, can judge them. If it were up to me, I’d teach them to drink and gamble if it made them happy. They deserve it.
